Floating head, standing head

Recently I read about ‘floating heads’.
Floating heads are BJD head that have no body because the owner can’t restrain his/herself from buying more.

This reminded me of the MiniFee heads I have laying in a drawer, waiting for me to build up the courage to attempt face-ups. I don’t care about naked heads in a drawer, but once they are painted they should be protected.
One way to keep them safe is to display them, but I don’t have the funds to buy another five (or was it six…) MiniFee bodies.

Yesterday I disassembled Noa to prepare her for restringing and I had nowhere to keep her head safe. So I dug up a 3D print I did a while ago and changed the elastic on this MSD sized bust.

It’s a relatively easy print I found on Thingiverse. I still need to clean it up (sanding) but it works for now. You can find it here:
BJD Female Bust Head Stand – remix (MSD)

It’s not perfect In my opinion and I am planning to model my own from scratch. Ideally I’ll have three or four of these on my desk to work on the heads.
Because Noa’s head attaches with a pin (or S-hook) and the MiniFees with a Fairyland adapter it’s not easy to change them out quickly. So I intend to make a hook compatible adapter that stores in the torso to quickly change the mount.

I think this looks a lot better than having heads laying about 🙂

On a side note: Looking at the photo here I can’t believe how good the eyes turned out! I wrote about the process here. I have made a bunch of other blanks I still need to paint. If the quality is up to my liking I might be able to start selling eyes…
