The how, the why, the dolls, the owner…

My grandma had dolls. Quite large dolls resembling children and presumably valuable. Perhaps even porcelain, I’m not sure.
Anyway, I was never interested in them, boy’s don’t play with dolls.
At least, that’s the general conception. Boys do play with dolls, though they were called GIJoe, Action Man or Ninja Turtles in my time.

Fast forward a decade or two, maybe three and here I am, with a doll on my desk and another in the mail.
Let’s just say that the past month have been quite eventful.

Let’s start at the beginning…

I have a great interest in drawing and I decided to take up drawing classes. Then the virus hit and classes have been cancelled. I’ve tried several thing to get started (I got some great books). I found anatomy figures by Bandai and SHfigirearts. Crazy expensive though, and quite small. There is a larger mannequin, which is even more expensive.
In the end the search lead me ball jointed dolls, or BJDs as they are more often called. At first I thought to make one myself. But time and opportunity lead me to buy my first BJD; an Alchemic Labo Quluts Unoa.

Yes, I’m in my 30’s and I just bought a doll… That was something I needed to process for a bit.

Though it may seem silly to own a doll, it offers a great potential for creative projects and inspiration.

For example, I have sewn some stuff in my life. Or actually, I pieced fabric together with self invented stitches.
Now I’m neck deep into Youtube learning to sew. I serviced my girlfriends sewing machine and am mending my own clothes.
Now I’m trying to make my own clothes. Which also means learning making patterns and learning construction. Tiny clothes are perfect for learning I’ve noticed as they require far less fabric and time to make.
I’m also planning to make eyes and my first made wig is on Noa’s head right now.

This blog will be one of me, Noa and the doll in the mail at the moment*.
Doll specific posts will get their own page and I’ll make ‘owners notes’ where I share my thoughts about BJD and general projects.

As always, it’s a work in progress.
Enjoy.

*I’ve though of a name for her, but am not a 100% sure yet. She’ll get her entry when the time comes
